About Me
I'm Lainey, mom of two beautiful little girls, ages 2 and 3. I know all too well the exhaustion that comes from having a toddler and a newborn. For 3 years I had a child that didn't sleep through the night, so I felt like I was always sleep deprived. I ate what I thought was pretty healthy food - lean meats, low fat dairy, whole grains, fresh fruit, and plenty of salads, but I still wasn't fueling my body with the nutrients it needed to cope with the sleep deprivation and stress. For me that exhaustion led to more and more convenience motivated food choices that were less healthy, which then depleted my body of even more of the nutrients it so badly needed. It was a downward spiral. I was exhausted, my mind was foggy, I had migraines, backaches, and the list goes on. I was also often cancelling activities because one or the other of my girls had a runny nose or a cough, which would also often keep them, and me, up at night. And my husband started experiencing arthritis symptoms. This was not a recipe for a happy healthy family. Something needed to change.
This motivated me to embark on a journey to improve our immune systems. Get Out of the Sick Cycle became my mantra. I searched the Internet, watched food documentaries, read books, listened to webinars, and had many conversations with doctors, naturopaths, chiropractors, chefs, friends, and acquaintances. I am going to share the information that I came across that compelled me to make changes to my family's diet and lifestyle.
I'm now on a mission to get and keep my family healthy, and the logical starting place for this is with food. We are what we eat. My goal is to ensure that my children receive the nutrition they need for their minds and bodies to grow healthily, and to minimize their exposure to harmful foods, toxins, and environments.
One of the major changes I made was to embrace wholeheartedly a plant-strong, nutrient-rich, high-raw diet. I have one adventurous child, to whom a new food is almost always met with an "I'd like to try it" response. My other child is cautious and timid in new situations. She needs time to assess the situation before she participates. She likes to know a food before she eats it. She is a picky eater, with texture challenges, and a fear of the unknown to conquer with each new food. As her younger sister charges uninhibited ahead, she cautiously with tiny baby steps follows. When I experiment and find a recipe for a new food, or method of presenting it, that she embraces I celebrate a win.
It is my hope that you will find some inspiration here to achieve a win in your journey to a happy healthy family.
